A skincare guide to the first 12 months - 5 of 5

Phase 5: Growing Explorer (9 to 12 months)

There are times when you gaze at your baby and ponder: how impeccable is my baby and how much s/he has developed! Your baby is turning more energetic, their skin's protective function is improving, but as they get more exposed to the environment, it starts to exert more stress on them. Consequently, the primary focus of baby skincare transitions to sanitizing, thwarting irritation, and parchedness.

Skincare Guide:

  1. Bathing Routine: keep up with these gentle washes! Resist the temptation of a bubble bath - your baby is still too young for that.

  2. Hydration: Moisturize the skin daily to maintain hydration, especially during dry weather.
  3. Minor Abrasion Care: As your baby becomes more active, s/he may experience minor abrasions or scratches. Keep these areas clean and apply a thin layer of antiseptic ointment and/or a barrier cream to promote healing.
  4. Sun Protection: Continue to protect the skin from the sun's harmful rays by seeking shade and using protective clothing and mineral sunscreen for babies.
  5. Insect protection: Babies can use organic bug repellent at 9 months, but with some caution. Choose products with safe ingredients like citronella, eucalyptus, or lemongrass oils. Spray these on their clothes, not skin. Also, dress them in long sleeves, hats, and use mosquito nets to protect against bug bites.
  6. Consultation: If you notice any persistent skin issues or changes, consult a pediatrician or dermatologist for guidance and treatment.

By following these specific baby skincare guides for the maturation of the skin barrier phase and the development of pigmentation phase, parents can ensure that their baby's skin remains healthy and protected during these critical stages of growth and development.

Before you know it, it's already your newborn's first birthday! You've successfully journeyed through the astonishing yet challenging first year. Your baby's skin health is not just about appearance—it's a protection against an often intricate environment, and a gateway to interacting with its delightful, loving facets. It helps in maintaining the baby's wellness, and also deepens your bond. Congratulations on your commendable endeavors, and wish you the best for the next stage!
